Griffith Marathon

On April 15, Gold Coast local Michael Shelley will compete on home soil in the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Marathon. The marathon event is one of the most gruelling in the Commonwealth Games schedule. Over 42 kilometres, athletes will stride their way from the Southport Broadwater Parklands, up through Runaway bay…make a U-turn, running all the way down to Burleigh Heads, and then another about-turn, for the final stretch back to Southport for the finish.  It’s a stunning waterfront route, taking in views of the spectacular beaches, and there are plenty of spectator vantage points for this free event.

Michael’s obsession with athletics began in high school, where he fell in love with the sport, but his big break happened when studying at Griffith University, whilst training for the Delhi Commonwealth Games. With just weeks away from the big race, Michael’s hoping for a repeat performance of his golden efforts at Glasgow!
Griffith University is proud to be the Presenting Partner of the Gold Coast 2018 Commonwealth Games Marathon and invites you to get in on the action.

There are some great vantage points along the route to cheer the athletes on and there’ll be plenty of fun at the finish line…and best of all, it’s free!
