There are a few ingredients that produce a happy chef: fresh local produce, low food miles and of course, a great kitchen to cook in. Luckily for Obie Faulkner, he can tick all of those items off the list! He’s the Head Chef at Pethers Rainforest Retreat in Tamborine Mountain. The region lies within the Scenic Rim, which is rich with wholesome produce. This means that most of Obie’s suppliers are right on his doorstep.
About 10 minutes down the road is Joseph the Greengrocer (5/15-17 Main Street, North Tamborine, 5545 0700). Joe sources produce from local farmers and producers, including crisp kale, marvelous mushrooms and tasty tomatoes. The fruit and vegetable baskets are constantly being filled with seasonal produce, so Obie always has something new to cook with.
Right next door to Joe is the Vintage Pickle, which stocks a bounty of local deli delights. The camel feta cheese from Summer Land Camels is a must try. The deli’s owner, Kate Raymont opened the Vintage Pickle in 2016, combining her love of local and quality ingredients.
Another passionate producer is Darren from Lemon Lovers Gelato and can we just say, this man knows how to experiment with local flavours! The lineup of quirky concoctions is certainly Instagram-worthy. Here are some of our favourites: White Muscat Sorbet using Cedar Creek wines and lemon sorbet with Limoncello from the Tamborine Mountain Distillery.
It’s more than just food you can find on the mountain! Fortitude Brewing Co. uses quality ingredients to craft its tasty ales, including one unlikely liquid – local rainforest water. The rainforest water is soft and clean, which in turn produces a crisp brew!
During Eat Local Week, Obie from Pethers at Tamborine Mountain will be hosting intimate five-course degustation dinners. Called the Sensory Experience, the meals showcase the best produce the Scenic Rim has to offer. The dinners will be held over three nights from Thursday the 4 of July.
