5 Minutes with Meredith McMaster Millinery

When you think of Brisbane racing fashion, one person comes to mind – Meredith McMaster, the brains behind the popular millinery label. After 20 years in the business, Meredith sure knows what she is doing, with her gorgeous high quality and diverse pieces continually taking the racing world by storm. We recently caught up with Meredith to find out just what makes Meredith McMaster Millinery tick….

How did Meredith McMaster Millinery begin?

I began making hats close to 20 years ago… I have a big head and couldn’t find any hats to fit me.  I thought it would be a great idea to do a millinery course at TAFE, and as soon as I started, I fell in love with millinery. I went ahead and completed the Cert 4 and have also attended many workshops, forums and the like, and have learnt so much from the best milliners both here and abroad.

Where do you get your inspiration?

Inspiration comes from everywhere – nature, the shape of buildings, the latest in fashion trends, fabrics – the list goes on and on.

What fashion trends do you expect we will see throughout the Spring racing season?

There still seems to be a lot of lace and ruffles in fashion this season. Halos and headbands are still going strong in millinery, and the colours I am working with this season are lilacs and yellows as well as white

What is your favourite piece that you have designed?

The white halo with handmade white raffia flowers would have to be my favourite.

What do you love about Brisbane’s fashion industry?

Brisbane has a strong and vibrant fashion vibe.  We have sensational designers including Gail Sorronda, Paul Hunt and George Wu. We also have the Brisbane Fashion Month which has events running thought out the month of October. This is run by Laura Churchill and she focuses the whole month on Queensland designers.

Where can we shop your pieces?

Meredith McMaster Millinery is stocked in Petrol at Paddington and all four of the Sacha Drake stores – Carindale, Chermside, Paddington and City.
