One of Brisbane’s newest Friday night hot spots is a food and entertainment precinct on the southside at Sherwood Road, Rocklea.
Brisbane Night Market is the city’s first fully undercover outdoor market. It’s housed in a space that is the bustling home of Queensland’s largest wholesale fruit and vegetable traders by day.
It’s roomy, it’s family friendly, and there’s over 600 free car parking spaces less than 100 metres walk from its entry.
What’s the verdict on the food? Yum!
According to Brisbane Market spokesperson Luke Leeson, it’s a feast for the senses.
“We’ve got over 40 different food vendors, we’ve got entrée, main and dessert in any type of way or fashion you could possibly imagine. You can grab a drink, you can grab a bite to eat, meet up with friends… It’s a really great atmosphere.”
Picture Spanish paella, slow-cooked barbecue ribs, and fudge made from a recipe passed down through the generations of one family.
“You can see everything being made, talk to the vendors–they’re preparing everything on the spot,” Leeson said. “It’s as fresh as can be, and we’re all about fresh at the Brisbane Markets.”
Aside from the food stalls and bar areas set aside for end-of-week drinks, there are vendors selling clothing, arts and crafts, flowers and plants–even homegrown honey.
The entertainment varies from buskers to big-stage performances, and children’s entertainers include magicians and dancers.
Brisbane Night Market opens in the late afternoon and goes well into the evening. That’s rain, hail or shine! Entry is $2.50 per person, but children under 15 are free.
According to one local mother of a small child, “It’s good because the witching hours (from 4 p.m. to 7 p.m.) there’s never anything to do. So we were just saying it actually gives us something to do, get you out of the house. It’s cheap and cheerful, but it’s really good food.”
The night market runs every Friday from 4 p.m. to 10 p.m. You can find more details on Facebook and Instagram.
