South Bank Turns 25

The South Bank Parklands were first opened to the public in 1992. What started as abandoned prime real estate opposite the CBD, and on the Brisbane River, has evolved into so much more over the past quarter century.

For many locals, South Bank has become the beating heart of Brisbane with bustling cafes and green spaces to enjoy throughout the year. Approximately 11 million people pass through the parklands each year. If you’re measuring it by square metre, that’s five times as many as New York’s Central Park!

With the 25th year of the parklands ticking over, now is the time to celebrate everything that South Bank has given us over the last quarter of a century.

South Bank will celebrate the occasion on Sunday the 8th of October from 10am – 4pm with a Picnic in the Parklands. Pack yourself a basket or pre-order one from a selection of traders like Popolo Italian Kitchen & Bar on River Quay.

There’s no doubt that many people hold special memories at South Bank and as part of the birthday celebrations, the public have been asked to share their ‘South Bank Moment’. No moment is too big or too small – whether it’s a proposal, first date or family get together. Visit the South Bank Brisbane Facebook page to share your memories.

There will be plenty of other free activities like live music, kid’s entertainment and street performances. It’s a chance to get together and celebrate what South Bank means to our river city.
