Coochiemudlo: Brisbane’s Closest Island Getaway

From a distance, Coochiemudlo Island looks like a deserted drop in the ocean. But get closer and you’ll discover a slice of paradise on the Redlands Coast that’s perfect for the whole family.

Coochie, as the locals lovingly call it, is just 10 minutes by boat from Victoria Point – the most accessible bay island in Brisbane.

Jump on board the Amity Trader and, practically before you can blink, you’ll be setting foot on the sand of this sheltered Moreton Bay Island.

Once ashore, you can explore the beaches – including the striking red rock from which the island takes its name. Coochiemudlo is one of several places in the Redlands that’s retained its indigenous name. Kutchi-Mudlo means place of red stone.

For light meals and great coffee, head to Curlew Café (3207 7207), which is just 50 metres from the jetty. You can dine in or pick up a take-away picnic pack.

You can even take lunch to the high seas. Coochie Boat Hire has a range of vessels – including BBQ pontoon boats, that come equipped with a two-burner barbie and enough room to accommodate up to a dozen people. No boat licence is required and you’ll get full instruction on how to handle the boat before you set off. Go swimming, fishing or simply circumnavigate the island.

Coochie has a unique “emerald fringe” – a natural green buffer that gives the island the appearance of being deserted when viewed from off-shore. There are also man-made and coral reefs to explore.

You may want to enjoy more of Coochie – which means extending your stay overnight. Oasis on Coochiemudlo has one and two-bedroom units, plus family villas. It’s all set in tropical gardens– just a minute’s walk to the beach.

There’s also a swimming pool and on-site dining room, which offers a changing menu throughout the week.

Coochiemudlo is set in calm, sheltered waters which makes it a great family-friendly destination.

In fact, it’s so cute and so close – Coochie may be the easiest island escape you’ll ever have.
